As we approach the midst of the Fall semester, our campus is decorated for a cause. Like every year, Pinktober at Habib and around the world raises awareness about Breast Cancer, and the community's dedication and response to the cause is admirable. Our very own SerVe club has been the front and center of this wave of awareness and knowledge that the Lions so passionately value and take part in.
On Tuesday, October 24th the club organized an information session in collaboration with Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital that lays the foundation for quality and affordable oncological treatments in the country. Breast cancer affects almost one out of nine women in Pakistan at some point in their lives, and thus, raising awareness of the disease among youth is of utmost importance. Given the need to promote self-testing and the intensity of the disease, SKMCH’s information session covered a variety of areas leading up to it. Initiating discussions about how Breast cancer can be prevented, the session included first-hand recovery and experience accounts from survivors. For us, the latter was crucial to the purpose as it sparked feelings of empathy and inspired self-testing in women, but also amongst male attendees who could educate and support their female peers.
As we approach the end of October, we cannot but look forward to future awareness sessions and the dedication shown by our community to the cause next year. We hope to see you again in the spirit of Pinktober, so continue to stop by more sessions and flaunt your pink bows!
